Our roadmap focuses on our own emissions (Scope 1 and 2), not Scope 3, which includes aircraft emissions. Our current carbon emissions are around 9,000 tons a year, mainly from gas boilers. We're converting these to electricity, despite the high costs. Quebec's energy is mostly hydroelectric, making our emissions relatively low, but we aim to further reduce them. We're also aiming for high sustainability certifications in construction and using alternative renewable energy, such as photovoltaic panels, as well as converting our fleet of vehicles to electric, including parking shuttles.

Electrifying short-haul flights is at least at parity or better in terms of direct operating costs. In Europe, green fees are being added to traditional CO2-heavy flights, raising ticket prices. The primary challenge has been achieving sufficient energy density in batteries to make electric flight viable. Historically, the technology wasn't available, which is one of the reasons why we are developing our own battery solution.

There haven’t been any significant drawbacks. We're not zealots about sustainability; instead, we focus on practical, long-term solutions. For example, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is an area we’re exploring, but it's currently not produced at scale and is 3-5 times more expensive than jet fuel. Another example is the use of dynamic glass in our terminals, which not only improves customer comfort but also reduces our energy costs.

Another shared focus is safety. While aerospace has long prioritized safety due to the nature of air travel, the automotive industry has recently followed suit, adopting similar rigorous safety measures. Both industries also face the challenge of reducing their environmental impact, though aerospace benefits from a more experienced engineering community capable of handling these technological shifts.

It’s a very different experience, but the shift to a young company with new technology was the right step for me as going from big aircraft to small, and from an established company to a young one, was appealing. Conventional aerospace sees batteries as dangerous and more challenging, but now they're the biggest part of our aircraft and ultimately the most sustainable solution compared to e-fuels, which are less challenging for legacy companies.
