DHL Supply Chain is a global leader in contract logistics.

What is the state of affairs at DHL's supply chain right now?

For us, it is about accelerated sustainable growth. As one of the world's largest logistics companies, we have a footprint across 120 countries, giving us a unique perspective on global supply chain dynamics. Our commitment to sustainable growth is not just about increasing revenue across various services like parcel, air, and ocean transportation but also ensuring our operations are environmentally responsible and resilient. We underline the need for sustainability in supply chains, focusing on aspects such as cyber protection and data security. This approach enables us to provide our customers with the necessary tools to adapt and thrive in the current marketplace while maintaining high standards of service and reliability.

In light of the increasing complexities in supply chains due to factors like cyber threats, what is the primary concern that keeps you up at night?

The potential impact of cyber events is a significant concern for everyone in the supply chain. Disruptions can severely affect our ability to service customers, which is why we are committed to implementing strong business continuity plans. We work diligently to ensure that our operations are not reliant on single systems, allowing us to maintain service continuity even in the face of disruptions. Recent incidents have highlighted our ability to support customers even when their systems fail.

With rising customer expectations for delivery, how does DHL define customer delight in the current market?

Customer delight encompasses understanding the evolving expectations of consumers, who increasingly demand fast delivery options like same-day or next-day service. While some customers still prioritize speed, many are willing to accept longer delivery times in exchange for a wider selection of products or lower costs, particularly if these options contribute to sustainable delivery. We are seeing a notable increase in B2C e-commerce, particularly from international markets, which reflects this shift. Our focus is on developing tailored solutions that cater to diverse consumer segments, ensuring we can meet their varying needs while promoting sustainability in our delivery processes.

How is the mode of delivery changing within DHL's network?

We recognize that fluctuations in railroad transportation volumes may be cyclical, influenced by the current economic climate. Nonetheless, we remain committed to decarbonizing our supply chain, and we are investing heavily in carbon-friendly delivery methods. For instance, many of our vehicles in metropolitan areas, like New York City, are electric, and we expect this trend to continue. Additionally, we are observing a significant reshoring trend, particularly to Mexico and Canada. This shift is especially prevalent in the automotive industry, where EV manufacturers are establishing operations in Mexico. The evolving tariff landscape will influence how these products are delivered, but we are confident that supply chains are becoming agile enough to adapt to these changes.

Are there any specific value chains or industries DHL is looking to grow into?

We are actively engaging with organizations that are redefining manufacturing strategies, particularly in the realm of 3D manufacturing. Protecting intellectual property in these supply chains is crucial, and we are well-equipped to ensure that our customers' innovations remain secure.

Our goal is to maintain high standards of quality while facilitating the production processes of our clients. In light of the evolving landscape, we aim to leverage our expertise in logistics to support these emerging sectors effectively. By doing so, we can play a significant role in helping companies navigate the challenges associated with new manufacturing methodologies.

What would you like your legacy at DHL to look like by 2027?

I aspire to protect and enhance the culture of belonging and inclusivity that we foster within our organization. With over 500,000 associates globally, our shared vision of connecting people and improving lives is what sets us apart. I aim to ensure that DHL remains a great place to work for everyone. Additionally, I hope to see us achieve zero carbon execution in our supply chain solutions while remaining agile enough to respond to diverse customer needs. Embracing technologies like AI and robotics will be crucial as we seek to enhance our operational capabilities and adapt to the evolving demands of the market.
