Can you provide an overview of LANXESS' status and strategic changes in 2023, especially in the US market?

In 2022, LANXESS, a specialty chemicals company, reported sales of €8 billion, with a global workforce of 13,000 employees across 58 sites. Notably, our presence in North America has expanded through acquisitions, now boasting 2,300 employees and 20 sites. This growth underscores LANXESS's commitment to the US market, reflecting nearly 30% of our sales and highlighting the strategic importance of the US in our global operations. Our focus on developing, manufacturing, and marketing chemical intermediates and consumer protection products remains core to our strategy amidst the dynamic challenges of the market.

What were the major challenges LANXESS faced in 2023?

The challenges in 2023 were multifaceted, involving raw material and energy cost increases, a global reduction in demand, geopolitical instability, logistical challenges, and regulatory complexities. Particularly in Europe, these challenges were pronounced, affecting our operations significantly. Regulatory changes demanded proactive engagement with governing bodies to ensure the development of sensible, predictable and science-based regulations. This landscape shaped our strategic priorities, emphasizing the need for agility and foresight in navigating these challenges while continuing to focus on sustainability and innovation.

As attracting talent is one of the greatest challenges facing the industry, what strategies does LANXESS employ to attract and retain talent in the industry?

Attracting and retaining talent is crucial for LANXESS, and we approach this challenge on multiple fronts. Firstly, employee development is paramount. Our workforce is the backbone of our innovation and market engagement, necessitating continuous investment in their growth. We have initiatives like the rotational engineers program to nurture future leaders and ensure a robust talent pipeline. Additionally, staying attractive to new talent is vital, especially given our mature industry status. We strive to remain competitive and appealing to potential employees by offering varied developmental opportunities and fostering a work environment that encourages long-term career growth within LANXESS.

How does the European regulatory environment impact chemical companies, and what opportunities does it present?

The European regulatory environment significantly impacts our operations, necessitating a proactive approach in engaging with regulatory bodies to influence sensible, science-based legislation. This political presence has become essential, mirroring the need for similar engagement in the US. Adapting to regulations while advancing our sustainability goals is a priority, with LANXESS aiming for climate neutrality by 2040 for Scopes 1 and 2, and by 2050 for Scope 3. Recognitions from numerous third-party benchmark companies affirm our commitment to sustainability, integrating it into our core strategy and operations, thereby illustrating the critical role of navigating regulatory landscapes while seizing opportunities for innovation and sustainable development.

Do you see an increasing move towards de-globalization and localization in the industry?

There is a noticeable shift towards localization, reflecting a strategy to be closer to both the source of raw materials and the customers. This approach, embodied by our extensive network of 58 sites globally and 20 in the US, aims to mitigate reliance on singular sources and diversify our supply chains for risk management and sustainability. However, the value of a global presence remains significant, especially given the geographical constraints on the availability of certain chemicals and intermediates. It's imperative for us in the industry to be vigilant about global investments in raw materials , to ensure independent access to essential resources.

What innovations at LANXESS are you most excited about?

I'm particularly thrilled about our commitment to sustainability, highlighted by our Flavor and Fragrances business unit that has made a  green solution available for each of its product offerings. Our ScopeBlue initiative underscores this commitment by offering customers sustainable alternatives with circular - recycled or biobased raw materials across our product lines.

Our dedication extends to various sectors, including automotive and battery solutions, underlining our role in new market developments and consumer protection, showcasing our commitment to both innovation and sustainability.

How is LANXESS integrating emerging technologies like AI and predictive analytics?

LANXESS is actively embracing digitalization, recognizing the pivotal role of high-quality data in enabling artificial intelligence to optimize our production processes and operational efficiency. Our efforts include leveraging AI for incremental improvements and adopting it in commercial excellence initiatives to enhance customer value and understand market dynamics better. These technological advancements are not just about maintaining competitiveness; they're about continuous improvement and resource optimization amidst rising challenges, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and excellence in the chemical industry.

Is there something about the chemical industry that you believe deserves more attention?

The crucial role of chemistry in our lives, past, present, and future, cannot be overstated. It's vital to recognize the chemical industry's commitment to responsible and sustainable production. Education and transparent communication are key to combating misinformation and fostering a broader understanding of the importance our activities' and products have in the modern world. This educational effort, supported by industry bodies and individual companies, is essential in ensuring the public recognizes the integral role of chemistry in developing a sustainable future.
