To start, could you give readers an introduction to Balchem, your role, and the company’s mission in nutrition and wellness?

Balchem Human Nutrition and Health is a business segment of Balchem Corporation. We provide specialty ingredients for the food, beverage, and dietary supplement industries, partnering with well-known brands to bring high-quality nutrition solutions to consumers worldwide. Balchem reaches over a billion consumers each year, delivering ingredients they encounter on supermarket shelves or through online retailers. As a company, our vision is to make the world a healthier place. We strive to lead the ingredient sector with innovative, science-backed solutions that support global health and wellness.

Our growth trajectory has been strong, driven by our commitment to understanding consumer needs and emerging trends. We’re not just here to follow the market but to actively shape it by offering ingredients that meet evolving consumer demands, whether for longevity, mental focus, or general wellness.

Can you explain Balchem’s approach to ingredient sourcing and how consumer trends influence the ingredients you provide?

At Balchem, ingredient development always starts with consumer needs. We look closely at market trends and unmet demands to identify where our products can have the most impact. In the past, ingredient suppliers mostly responded to requests from brands, but today, we’re proactive in understanding end-market needs. This proactive stance allows us to be forward-thinking and align with what consumers genuinely want in their health products, rather than simply reacting to what brands ask for.

Our commitment to science and quality plays a key role in this approach. Each ingredient is meticulously sourced and tested to ensure it meets our standards. For example, we’ve invested in extensive research on choline, a lesser-known but essential nutrient, promoting brain, metabolic and epigenetic health. By educating consumers on the benefits of ingredients like choline, we help them understand their value, akin to more familiar nutrients like vitamin C or omega-3.

You mentioned education as a priority. How does Balchem approach consumer education, and how does it benefit both the company and its partners?

Education is critical, especially in the dietary supplement space, where consumers are increasingly interested in what they put into their bodies. Traditionally, ingredient manufacturers relied on brands to educate consumers, but we’re taking a more direct approach. For example, our recent campaign with the New York Jets promoted “VitaCholine®”, our branded source of choline, on a large scale, making it visible to consumers in stadiums and online. This campaign drives traffic to our website and educates consumers about choline’s benefits, supporting co-branding partners who use our ingredients by raising consumer awareness.

We also leverage digital influencers and collaborate with health practitioners to spread information across different platforms. By sharing scientific findings and health benefits directly with consumers, we’re making it easier for them to understand the value of our ingredients and helping them make informed decisions when choosing products. Additionally, we collaborate with leading institutions like Cornell University, the UNC Nutrition Research Institute, Virginia Tech, the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), the American Nutrition Association (ANA), and the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) to advance scientific research, tackle key health challenges, and elevate consumer education on nutrition. Through these partnerships and a network of over 50 scientists from top institutions, we empowers consumers with trusted, science-backed insights for informed health and wellness decisions.

What strategies are in place for Balchem’s global expansion, and how does innovation play a role in this growth?

Our expansion strategy has three main pillars: geographic expansion, innovation, and consumer education. Geographic expansion is a top priority since most of our business is still based in the U.S., and we see opportunities to enter markets in Europe and emerging regions. We plan to replicate successful marketing campaigns, like the Jets partnership, in these new markets to build awareness. Additionally, we’re investing in supply chain and local capabilities to support our expansion efforts.

Innovation is central to everything we do. Alongside continuous improvements to enhance the performance and versatility of our existing ingredients, we also pursue radical advancements that redefine the market. Our latest release, Optifolin+®, exemplifies this: a pioneering, bioavailable, fully bioactive form of folate designed to support wellness across all life stages. This groundbreaking ingredient represents not just an iteration but a new benchmark in folate innovation. By balancing transformative developments like Optifolin+® with ongoing refinements, we bring a dynamic, forward-looking portfolio to meet diverse consumer needs, delivering value and setting new standards.

Consumers are more discerning about the ingredients they consume. How does Balchem ensure product transparency and quality?

Transparency and quality are at the heart of Balchem’s mission. With consumers reading labels more closely and seeking quality assurances, we are dedicated to providing clear, science-backed information about our products. For instance, vitamin K2, one of our key ingredients, is highly sensitive to light and oxidation, so we educate consumers on how to choose high-quality, stable sources. We invest in stability, encapsulation, and ensuring bioavailability so consumers get exactly what they’re paying for.

In addition to transparency about ingredient efficacy, we prioritize ethical sourcing. Our products are made with stringent quality controls and responsible sourcing practices, which sets us apart from less transparent options on the market. We believe consumers appreciate this commitment, and it strengthens trust in both our brand and our partners.

With sustainability being a growing consumer concern, how does Balchem address sustainability in its operations?

Sustainability is integral to our approach, especially as consumers seek transparency and responsibility in the products they buy. For us, sustainability includes minimizing our environmental impact, ethical sourcing, and ensuring ingredient purity. For example, our vitamin K2 is produced in Norway under strict environmental guidelines, which not only maintains its quality but also supports ethical and sustainable practices.

Our sustainability efforts go hand-in-hand with consumer education on ingredient traceability. We’re committed to ensuring our customers understand the environmental impact of their choices. By promoting transparency, we differentiate ourselves from products with uncertain sourcing and environmental practices, making sustainability a competitive advantage for Balchem and our partners.

How does Balchem approach social responsibility, and what initiatives are in place to support diversity and community engagement?

Social responsibility is fundamental to our operations, especially as younger generations place a higher value on corporate ethics. We work with major companies that set high standards, making it essential for us to align with these values. Additionally, we’re selective about operating in locations with lower ethical risks, which helps us maintain integrity across our supply chain.

Balchem’s commitment extends beyond compliance; we actively engage with local communities to promote education and health awareness.  Programs like Balchem Helping Hands and Belonging at Balchem demonstrate our commitment to corporate social responsibility. Through Balchem Helping Hands, we support our communities with philanthropic partnerships, a matching donation program, and employee volunteer efforts, all aimed at making a difference where we operate. Belonging at Balchem promotes a culture of diversity, inclusion, and belonging, recognizing that a diverse team and an inclusive culture of belonging enables innovation and excellence. Together, these initiatives reflect our dedication to creating positive change both within our company and in the world. By fostering a culture of responsibility, we not only attract talent but also reinforce our reputation as a company committed to positive social impact.
