Allergan Aesthetics, a market leader in the aesthetic space, is known for its leading products across various franchises, including neurotoxins, dermal and soft tissue fillers, non-invasive body contouring, plastic surgery and regenerative medicine, and topical skincare. Acquired by AbbVie four years ago, Allergan Aesthetics became a wholly owned subsidiary, marking our integration into the AbbVie community. My journey with Allergan Aesthetics, now AbbVie, spans nearly 14 years, starting in the medical devices division. Throughout this time, we've significantly grown through acquisitions and integrations, where I've taken the role of the senior vice president and global head of Allergan Aesthetics R&D, emphasizing innovation and leadership in the aesthetic medicine field.
How do you select the aesthetic technologies and products you focus on?
Our selection is heavily based on science-backed products that are differentiated by their innovative technology, leading to optimal patient outcomes with a strong safety profile.
Despite common misconceptions, the aesthetic field is deeply rooted in science, not merely vanity. We prioritize technologies that address unmet needs within the aesthetic space, ensuring our offerings stand out for their safety and effectiveness.

Could you share insights on the non-aesthetic uses of Botox and its importance?
Botox, well-known for its aesthetic applications, also has several therapeutic indications, such as treating upper limb spasticity and chronic migraines, showcasing its versatility. While I oversee the aesthetic side, including treatments to temporarily improve the look of forehead lines, crow’s feet lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults, Botox's therapeutic applications highlight its significant impact beyond aesthetics. Its ability to temporarily relax muscles has been a game-changer for patients, demonstrating Botox's utility in addressing a range of medical conditions effectively.
Our ongoing development efforts aim to expand Botox's indications, ensuring its safety profile supports its use in new therapeutic and aesthetic applications. This exemplifies our commitment to exploring the full potential of our products to address a wide range of needs.

With the largest investment in our industry, Allergan Aesthetics boasts over 60 pipeline programs globally, driven by a diverse team of experts. We're excited about breakthroughs like BoNT/E, a novel botulinum neurotoxin serotype E , offering early onset and rapid action, aimed at attracting those curious about aesthetic treatments. Our focus extends to next-generation toxins and addressing aging's underlying causes through innovative products in filler, plastic surgery, and regenerative medicine spaces, aiming to restore youthful tissue and address significant unmet needs.
How does your background in stem cells and regenerative biomaterials influence your work?
My background in stem cells and regenerative biomaterials aligns with Allergan Aesthetics' efforts to address tissue disease and dysfunction, particularly in aging. By focusing on stem cells, biomaterials, and growth factors, we aim to restore tissue function through regenerative cues, enabling our body's stem cells to rebuild damaged tissues.
