Could you explain Lubrizol’s role in the life sciences sector and its specific contributions to nutraceuticals and related fields?

Lubrizol Life Science is a specialized division within The Lubrizol Corporation, focusing on four core markets: beauty, home, pharma, and nutraceuticals. This structure allows us to leverage synergies across these areas, driving innovation and responding effectively to evolving consumer trends. Wellness, which encompasses physical, emotional, and environmental health, plays a central role in shaping our solutions.

In the nutraceuticals space, we focus on developing science-backed, bioavailable ingredients that support internal health while also connecting to external beauty and improving well-being. For example, we integrate principles from the beauty industry to create nutraceuticals that promote skin health, aligning with a holistic approach to wellness. This interconnected perspective ensures our product portfolio meets consumer needs comprehensively, whether it’s through supporting skin vitality, creating cleaner home environments, or improving overall health.

How do you see the growing consumer interest in wellness and how is Lubrizol adapting to these trends?

Consumer interest in wellness has surged, driven by greater awareness through social media and influencers. People are now paying attention to their health earlier, with younger generations entering markets like skincare and nutraceuticals.

For instance, we’ve observed teenagers using anti-aging products—something that was unheard of a decade ago. This growing demand has also been influenced by an aging population seeking to feel and look better as they age, prompting significant market growth.

At Lubrizol, we respond to these trends through a consumer-centric approachwith our internal Foresee Lab™ platform. The Foresee Lab™ seamlessly connects all the data gathered from digital channels, consumer insight and trend platforms, translating all the inputs into innovation opportunities. Taking advantage of the latest technologies our team of experts analyzes all the information to guide our targeted research and development efforts. It is an agile process that relies on giving value to the data and strategic adjustments to stay aligned with consumer needs and industry trends.

We see skin health as a key indicator of internal wellness, and we design products that reflect this connection. For instance, our Zenerity™ biotech ingredient, developed using fermentation methods, addresses skin inflammation caused by external stress, aging or unhealthy diet. This focus on holistic health is complemented by our commitment to biodegradable, naturally derived products, which align with consumer preferences for sustainability.

How does your partnership with companies like Suzano contribute to your sustainability goals?

Collaborations like the one we have with Suzano, a leader in Brazil’s paper industry, are essential to advancing our sustainability strategy. For instance, we’ve co-developed a fully biodegradable ingredient that will launch early 2025. This partnership aligns with consumer demand for clean beauty and natural ingredients while maintaining the high-performance standards expected from our products.

These partnerships enable us to integrate sustainability into all aspects of product development. By collaborating with industry leaders from diverse sectors, we can innovate more effectively, ensuring that our products meet the growing demand for eco-friendly solutions in beauty, home care, and beyond. Our approach demonstrates that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand, creating value for both consumers and the planet.

Why did Lubrizol choose China for its Beauty Research Institute, and what role does this play in your strategy?

China is a critical market for us, not only because of its size but also due to the region’s rapid innovation and consumer sophistication. The Lubrizol Beauty Research Institute in Shanghai reflects our commitment to staying close to regional consumers and understanding their specific needs. For instance, hair and skincare requirements can vary significantly due to factors like water quality, pollution and climate, making localized research vital.

Beyond China, we’re investing in similar facilities in Brazil and India, recognizing the importance of local-for-local strategies. These hubs allow us to innovate with a regional focus while also creating solutions that can be scaled globally. Built based on the best practices of Lubrizol’s clinical testing in Barcelona, Spain , the Shanghai Beauty Research Institute not only supports our growth in Asia-Pacific but also provides insights that inform our global product development efforts.

What other regions are you focusing on for growth, and why?

India is a significant focus area due to its large population and growing need for nutritional solutions. For example, ourLipofer™ iron microcapsulesaddresse widespread iron deficiencies in the region. By investing in R&D and partnerships in India, we aim to make a meaningful impact on public health while driving growth.

Other key regions include Southeast Asia, Brazil and China. These markets are experiencing rapid development, with more consumers prioritizing health and wellness. While we maintain a strong position in Europe, our focus on these emerging markets allows us to meet growing demand and expand our presence globally.

What is Lubrizol’s long-term vision, and how do you see the company evolving over the next 10-20 years?

Our long-term vision is rooted in improving lives through science-based, sustainable innovations. We aim to be a key player in developing technologies that enhance health, wellness and sustainability. This means embracing a more open approach to innovation by collaborating with external partners and integrating consumer insights into everything we do.

As a technology-driven company, we are committed to aligning our strategies with the values of sustainability and holistic health. By focusing on partnerships and regional investments, we ensure that our solutions are both locally relevant and globally impactful. Ultimately, we want to create a future where our products not only meet consumer needs but also contribute to a healthier, more sustainable world.

How does Lubrizol balance the influence of social media and influencers with the need for science-based education?

Social media is a powerful tool for raising awareness and reaching younger consumers, but it can also lead to misinformation. At Lubrizol, we address this challenge by prioritizing science-based advocacy and education. For example, we collaborate with influencers and industry partners to explain the science behind our products. Recently, we supported a partner’s skincare launch by providing detailed scientific insights to influencers attending the event, helping them convey accurate information to their audiences.

Education is key to building credibility and trust. While we can’t control social media, we can ensure that accurate, science-based information is available and accessible. By engaging with influencers and consumers alike, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of the benefits and science behind our products, ultimately enhancing their impact.
