Can you tell us more about PQ Corporation's origin and also recent developments?
PQ Corporation boasts nearly two centuries of leading the supply in sodium silicates, among other silicate and zeolite products. Recently, my tenure of under five years has seen us restructuring into four divisions: eco services, catalysts, materials (also known as potters), and performance chemicals. In 2021, we spun off the performance chemicals division, focusing on organics and supporting a wide range of end uses across the chemical spectrum's second and third stages. Our emphasis lies in product innovation and leveraging silicates and derivatives that are environmentally beneficial. PQ's unique global presence allows us to engage closely with corporate accounts, guiding product development with silicate, silica, and zeolite applications.
What is driving your global expansion, and can you share insights into PQ's strategic growth plans?
Our growth strategy includes both organic and inorganic paths. In the U.S. Southeast, we've observed significant expansion due to our customers' competitive advantages in fuel and raw materials, partly driven by consumer demand for greener products like silica-based green tires. To address future supply and demand imbalances, we're tripling the size of our Augusta, Georgia plant, which will notably reduce CO2 intensity by over 25%. This expansion supports our commitment to environmental sustainability and customer growth in various sectors, including microelectronics and renewable fuels. On the inorganic side, acquiring Van Baerle in Switzerland opens new markets for us, particularly in construction and paints and coatings, and enhances our footprint in Asia, aligning well with our product lines and regional growth ambitions.
Looking ahead, how do you foresee the demand for silica evolving globally?
The demand for silicate and silica products is expected to grow, driven by their environmental benefits and versatility in replacing less sustainable materials like phosphates and chrome.
Our focus on innovation aims to enhance sustainability through circular economy contributions, CO2 reduction, and water impact improvements.
Silicate-based products, including precipitated silicas and gels, are increasingly used in sustainability-focused applications such as water purification, renewable energy, and construction, particularly in geopolymers as an alternative to traditional materials like Portland cement. These trends, coupled with our commitment to environmental stewardship, position PQ for continued growth in the global market.
Can you provide real-world examples of how silica and silicate are used, particularly in replacing microplastics in the personal care industry?
In the personal care sector, silicates process into various types of silicas—fumed, colloidal, gels, and precipitated—each offering unique benefits. For example, in toothpaste, silicas act as thickeners, abrasives, and builders, enhancing product efficacy with a favorable cost-to-value ratio. Additionally, our silica gels are utilized in beer production for clarification, extending shelf life. These applications highlight how our silicate-based solutions contribute to specialty products in food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, oral and hair care, and skincare, reinforcing our role in supporting customer formulation needs with safe, high-quality ingredients.
You were previously quoted as saying, “What we, as a global company, are struggling and challenged with is, we have portions of our business that are local, portions that are regional, and portions that are global.” How do you meld culture in a company is local, regional, and global?
Our approach to melding culture across local, regional, and global levels at PQ Corporation stems from foundational leadership principles and five core values: safety, integrity, people, customer focus, and sustainability. These values create a universal fabric that transcends geographical and linguistic barriers, ensuring consistent delivery across all company levels. Integrity and safety are paramount, with the former guiding ethical behavior and the latter emphasizing discipline and responsibility towards our employees' wellbeing. Customer focus is crucial as we exist to serve and ensure their success, which in turn determines our success. Recently, we've heightened our focus on diversity, inclusion, and sustainability, enhancing our corporate culture by embracing diverse perspectives and prioritizing contributions to environmental stewardship. This approach has not only enriched our internal community but also positioned us as a leader in sustainable chemical production.
In the face of diverse customer demands and global expansion, how does PQ Corporation build a cohesive identity?
Addressing the diverse demands of our global customer base, we observe varied emphases on sustainability and product innovation, influenced by regional headquarters, yet moving towards common goals. This diversity creates opportunities for PQ to align with global consumer preferences through varied product lines, such as different types of silicas for paints and coatings tailored to regional needs. Our investment in plant expansions, like in Asia, caters to specific market demands while supporting broader company objectives. This strategy ensures we remain relevant and competitive across different geographies, serving as a testament to our adaptability and commitment to innovation. As we cater to a burgeoning demand for renewables and sustainable products globally, our identity as a global yet localized partner strengthens, underlining our ability to address specific regional needs while contributing to global sustainability efforts.
What keeps you up at night regarding PQ Corporation's future?
Generally, I rest well, knowing PQ Corporation is on a path of significant growth driven by sustainability and partnerships with equally passionate customers. However, the challenge lies in scaling our resources to match the ambitions of our large customers and maintain a pace that not only keeps up with them but ideally stays ahead. Attracting talent to the chemical industry, amidst competing interests, plays a crucial role in this. We leverage our core values and innovative initiatives to draw talented individuals, who in turn attract more talent, building a strong workforce. Our enhanced social media presence also plays a crucial role in making PQ known as a forward-thinking company, not just resting on its historical laurels but actively making positive changes. My primary concern is ensuring PQ's ability to sustain its growth momentum and continue contributing positively to our customers, shareholders, and the planet.
Why does PQ Corporation matter in a chemicals industry worth $639 billion alone in the U.S?
